Material and section specification

Put the grade, section size, thickness and finish on the drawing.

Cold-rolled and galvanised steel are the main materials presented for WELDON FAB enquiries, commonly with a powder-coated finish. Stainless-steel and aluminium parts can also be submitted for review.

The guides below show how to describe an enquiry. They do not state stock availability, tolerance limits or a guaranteed production range.

Sheet and plate stock stored on racks inside the WELDON factory
WELDON factory material-storage area. Grade, thickness and stock availability are confirmed against each enquiry; tube sections are reviewed separately.

Section notation

Write the form first. Then define every symbol.

Dimensions are in millimetres unless the drawing states otherwise. L is the required cut length; state stock length separately when it affects supply. Tube corner radius, seam position and dimensional tolerances must be specified where they affect fit or appearance.

Sheet / plate

grade · t × W × L

t thickness · W width · L sheet length

Dimension-writing example only

Grade: specify separately · t1.5 × W300 × L500 mm

Not a stocked size or production-capability promise.

Drawing inputs
Grade or standard, thickness, finished size, flat pattern, bend direction, datum scheme and finish.
Before we quote
Available grade, thickness and tolerance are confirmed for the job.
Round tube generic parameter notation diagram

Round tube

grade · OD × t × L

OD outside diameter · t wall thickness · L cut length

Dimension-writing example only

Grade: specify separately · OD30 × wall 2 × cut length 600 mm

Not a stocked size or production-capability promise.

Drawing inputs
Material standard, OD, wall, cut length, seam condition, end preparation, hole datums and finish.
Before we quote
Available sizes and tube-processing steps are confirmed before quotation.
Square tube generic parameter notation diagram

Square tube

grade · B × B × t × L

B outside side length · t wall thickness · L cut length

Dimension-writing example only

Grade: specify separately · 30 × 30 × wall 2 × length 600 mm

Not a stocked size or production-capability promise.

Drawing inputs
Outside size, wall, length, corner or seam requirement, hole and bracket datums, joining and finish.
Before we quote
Section availability, joining and finish route are confirmed for the job.
Rectangular tube generic parameter notation diagram

Rectangular tube

grade · B × H × t × L

B outside width · H outside height · t wall thickness · L cut length

Dimension-writing example only

Grade: specify separately · 40 × 20 × wall 2 × length 600 mm

Not a stocked size or production-capability promise.

Drawing inputs
Width/height orientation, wall, length, corner or seam requirement, cosmetic face and interfaces.
Before we quote
Keep B/H orientation consistent across the model, drawing and RFQ. Availability and processing are confirmed before quotation.

Material families

Name the grade—not only the material family.

Material selection affects forming, joining, finish and inspection. A general label such as mild steel, stainless or aluminium is not enough when a specific grade or condition controls the job.

Common enquiry route

Cold-rolled steel

A main enquiry material for formed and powder-coated sheet-metal parts. State the grade or standard, thickness, cosmetic face, bend and weld requirements.

Exact grades, thickness range, stock and tolerance coverage are confirmed for the submitted job.

Common enquiry route

Galvanised steel

State the substrate grade, thickness and coating designation where known. Cut edges, bends, weld areas and any final finish must be reviewed together.

Corrosion-life or coating-performance requirements need an agreed specification and process record.

Reviewed per enquiry

Stainless steel

State the grade, thickness or tube wall, surface finish, weld appearance and any contamination-control requirement.

Grade, finish and contamination-control requirements are checked before quotation.

Reviewed per enquiry

Aluminium

State the alloy, temper, thickness or section size, joining method, cosmetic face and required finish.

Forming, joining and finish compatibility depend on the actual alloy and temper.

Process and finish inputs

State the required outcome, not only the process name.

A note such as powder coat black is incomplete when pretreatment, masking, appearance or interfaces affect acceptance.

Common drawing contexts

Examples of what the drawing may need to resolve.

These are general specification contexts, not named customer cases or proof that every material, section size or process has been completed by WELDON FAB.

Quote-input checklist

Prepare the decisions that change the quote.

If a field is undecided, mark it for manufacturability review instead of guessing. A placeholder should not look like an approved specification.
